KOB Movie Review: Is the ‘Return Of The King’ worth the hype and your time?

king of boys Movie Review the return of the king

We are still basking in all the emotions from watching the King of Boys; The Return of the King which dropped on Netflix today, August 27, 2021 and oh boy, all the seven episodes running into almost seven hours, literally had us screaming ‘Mad o’

Directed and produced by Kemi Adetiba, the cast of the film comprises Sola Sobowale (Eniola Salami), Toni Tones (Eniola Salami), Nse Ikpe-Etim (Jumoke Randle), RMD (Reverend Ifeanyi), IllBliss (Odogwu Malay), Deyemi Okanlawon (Adetola Fashina), Efa Iwara (Dapo Banjo), Char (President Mumusa).

As the title suggests, Eniola Salami (Sola Sobowale) returns in the series from a five-year exile with plans of starting life anew.

The storyline was fantastic and easy to follow and all the characters brought forth their A games; from Sola Sobowale to Toni Tones who played the younger Salami to Nse Ikpe Etim, to Charly Boy, Richard Mofe Damijo…all of them!

Sola Sobowale’s acting brought out all our emotions and had us on the edge on our seats; she got us teary eyed in Episode 1 where she inflicted pains on herself to mourn her late children and had us screaming OMG in some other scenes especially when she bestowed her crown to her successor (spoiler alert) in Episode 7; that twist was totally unexpected and chilling! Sola Sobowale deserves an oscar and emmy for the job well delivered.

King of Boys return movie review

The scene where she visited the president in disguise; the scene where she was asked why she is the King of Boys and her response, were some of our favorites in the seven hours long series.

And then can we take a moment to clap for Toni Tones for her stellar performance; we could feel every of her emotions, her statements, remarks and then her last scene where she had a joint chant with her older self, amazing!

Nse Ikpe Etim was another character with an outstanding performance especially in the scene where she dared her husband, the Governor to hit her in Episode 7.

Needless to say, Kemi Adetiba is an actor’s director! It’s a special skill being able to bring out the best in your actor and she really did out the best in all her cast. She killed the shots with her sheer mastery of lights, shadows and angles.

Ultimately, a great deal of a film’s tone is reflected by its lighting and KOB; the return of the king scored 100%. Worthy of mention is also its sound track, background music, the chants, eulogies, dialogues ….all perfect and electrifying!

The Return of the king will make you cry, laugh out loud, get angry, have on your feet and much more and therefore, It is recommended that you see it. It is worth the hype and your time even though it had some unnecessary characters and subplots.

Oh by the way, do not be in a rush after the end credits in episode 7, otherwise, you miss when Aare got served what he truly deserved!

Ps, are we expecting a KOB 3 as it seems there is a baby on board 🙂
