Obi Cubana opens up on his mother's funeral

Nigerian billionaire businessman Obinna Iyiegbu, better known as Obi Cubana, has opened up on his mother’s burial.

The billionaire, who rose to fame for giving his mother a much talked about funeral, in an interview with media personality, Chude Jideonwo revealed why he went all out for his late mother.

The Cubana group founder revealed that in his family, nobody has lived up to 80 years. According to him, his father died at 66, his grandfather died at 78, and his father’s younger brother died at 75. Cubana stated that he wanted his mother to break the generational curse and would always encourage and celebrate her birthday yearly.

Unfortunately, their wish didn’t come to pass as his mother died when she was close to 79, and the billionaire and his siblings, who were already saving up for her burial, decided to give her a befitting burial, regardless.

“In my family, I am saying it for the first time: nobody has lived up to 80. My father died at 66, my father’s brother died at 75, my grandfather died at 78, and I told my mum, you will break this. I told her to break it if it’s a generational curse or something. I promised her that for the burial I would throw for her, nobody would break, and we started saving up for that.

I think she died on 31st December; she was 78 and a half, and we were all looking forward to her 80th birthday. But what happened happened, so let’s celebrate her. At least she almost broke it”.

Refreshing your memory, in 2021, Obi Cubana broke the internet as he buried his mother in grand style in Oba, Anambra state. The businessman rose to fame following the burial ceremony which attracted business executives, pop stars like Davido, Dbanj, KCee, E-Money, Poco Lee and Ubi Franklin and actors, Kanayo Kanayo, Alex Ekubo and Williams Uchemba.

The burial reverberated Nigeria for days and weeks as it showcased the height of grandeur and richness. The high point of it all was when the businessman received 246 cows from his friends.

Obi Cubana has no doubt come a long way in life. In 2022, Obi recounted how circumstances almost ruined his convocation at UNN. The Cubana Group founder narrated his experience while travelling for his convocation, recounting how he and his friends travelled on night bus because of its affordability and cheapness.

Unfortunately, he lost one of the priceless gifts his uncle gave him for his good grades and that nearly ruined his convocation.

Following his story change, the billionaire has never ceased giving to the less privileged. He had once gifted 20 of his former classmates two million Naira each.

He had also given a scholarship to a viral pure water hawker, Ekuma Jeremiah and had changed his financial status.

His philanthropic acts and business acumen earned him a Doctorate in Business Administration from Enugu State University.
