New minimum wage: Nigerian govt increases offer to N62,000

The Nigerian Government has raised its proposal for a new national minimum wage from N60,000 to N62,000.

Both the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) also reduced its demand from N494,000 to N250,000.

There was no consensus at the meeting and the Tripartite Committee on New National Minimum Wage has adjourned.

The organized private sector is also in agreement with the government over the N62,000 offer.

This comes after the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, claimed that the Tripartite Committee on the minimum wage is close to agreeing on a new national minimum wage.

He disclosed this after emerging from the meeting of the committee on Friday in Abuja.

“We had a very fruitful deliberation and of course you know it is a technical subcommittee of a committee.

“And at the level of the committee, we have reached near consensus and by the time we go to the plenary, we will have a complete agreement and maybe from there the media can start their job.

“As it is now, I think we are better of than we were,” Uzodimma said.
